Update – Save the library campaign SUCCESSFUL!

Circulation requirements have been met and exceeded. The library no longer risks closure thanks to your support.

On October 2008, the Cape Breton Regional Library Board informed us that the Main-à-Dieu branch library was scheduled to close later that month. Then Association President Sean Howard asked that the community be given a chance to increase membership and activity at the branch, which has been an important part of our social life and infrastructure since 1969.

A reprieve was granted, but in order for the branch to stay open, circulation figures would have to increase significantly. The Save the Library Campaign was launched, encouraging all residents without a library card, both adults and children, to become members and enjoy the benefits of this service – a service which we were in real danger of losing forever.

The first stage of the campaign successfully brought circulation numbers up  97% overall from the same period of last year. With this success the Library Board of directors extended the decision again, this time until September 2009, at which point another decision would be made.

Circulation numbers remained up, proving community support was ample and viable. After the nine months of campaigning ”The Board” has decided to keep the Libraray open . A VERY SUCCESSFUL Campaign,One that would not have been so successful had it not been for the community support.

We marked the 40th anniversary of the library on October 29th. The evening was made extra special with a visit Lesley Crewe who had read from her latest release”Hit and Mrs”. Also a presentation from CBRM councillor Brian Lahey for the 40th Anniversary recognition and also from MLA ALfie MacLeod who had placed a motion for Resolution # 736  into the House of Assembly for also the Recognition of the 40th Anniversary Milestone of this branch. Motion was passed. Certificates were received and are proudly displayed.
