The Homework Dilemma
The homework routine has begun and the same questions continue to challenge parents. How much time should my child spend on homework each night? How much help should I give to my child in order to complete the homework? When am I as a parent encouraging independence in my child as opposed to frustration? The answers to these questions are unique to each child and family situation but there are some guidelines that may help parents navigate the nightly ritual with more confidence and family peace.
Beginning with grade one parents can expect children to have homework on school nights. How much help is too much? Children who understand homework assignments should be able to work at the tasks for a reasonable time with adult supervision. This does not mean a parent has to be on top of a child but must be aware of how the child is managing, the time it is taking to complete each task and offer encouragement along the way.
All children need help with homework now and then but if your child requires extra help each night a closer look at what is happening is needed. The difference between encouraging independence and causing frustration is not self-evident to parents. A child who can get answers too easily by asking adults in his or her environment may not be inclined to persist in efforts to find answer alone. On the other hand, a child who struggles to complete homework and does not get the necessary help can become frustrated and discouraged. The answer for the parent lies in knowing your child as a learner. This knowledge comes from an awareness of how your child is doing at school and how he or she is managing homework on a regular basis.
If you find your child is spending too long on homework every night and even with help is having difficulty then it is time for action. Begin by opening up dialogue at home about homework concerns. Make an appointment to speak to the teacher about it. Also, you can communicate with other parents about their experience with homework. Homework is a family affair but by opening channels of communication about it you will help relieve stress as well as provide opportunities to develop new strategies to help your child.
Homework Time Guidelines:
- Grade 1- 10-15 min.
- Grade 2- 20-30 min.
- Grade 3- 30-45 min.
- Grade 4- 40-60 min.
- Grade 5- 50-75 min.
- Grade 6- 60-90 min.
