Right to Heat

A government knows it’s got an ‘election issue’ on its hands when even the so-called middle class is talking about it. Indeed, it seems the high cost of fuel – and what it will mean for the cost of home heating this winter – has made it onto just about everyone’s agenda.

Heat or Eat

It’s especially worrisome for seniors and others living on fixed/low incomes. Budgets that were already stretched are sure to snap, and the most vulnerable segment of society will be left freezing in the dark.

We believe it’s a human dignity issue when low income forces people to choose between filling their oil tank and filling their pantry, and that, therefore, affordable home heating should be guaranteed.

The Campaign

In response to increased worries over increasing fuel costs, the Main-à-Dieu Community Development Association is launching the “Right to Heat” campaign.

We’re collecting testimonials from seniors and fixed-/low-incomers and anyone else concerned that rising fuel costs will make it increasingly difficult to heat their home this fast approaching winter.

Testimonials will be sent to government representatives, along with recommendations for how to better meet the needs of those struggling with energy costs.

For example, better investment in improving the efficiency of Canadian homes, from insulation and weather stripping to high-efficiency appliances.
